On 1 June 2015, NHK announced that new series of the programme will be broadcast on every Thursday from July to September 2015. The series called "Holmes and Watson Mystery no heya" (A Room of Mystery) will feature John H. Watson and make him comment the reasoning of Holmes. Some episodes from the first series will also be broadcast.[3]

Summary

John H. Watson, a boy who transfers from Australia to a fictional boarding school called Beeton School in London becomes a roommate of Sherlock Holmes who lives in the room 221B of Baker House, one of the houses of Beeton School. Though Holmes being said to be a trouble maker, he has keen power of observation and they become to solve the incidents occur in the school together receiving the requests of teachers and pupils.[2] The name of "Beeton School" is after Beeton's Christmas Annual and Eton College.[6]

In the show, Sherlock Holmes is a strange but clever pupil who lives in a room at 221B Baker Street. He always sleeps during class and does poorly especially in literature, philosophy and astronomy. Though being thought to be a troublemaker by teachers, he has brilliant reasoning powers and blows a party horn when he thinks about something.[7][8]

John H. Watson is a transfer from Australia to Beeton School and roommate of Holmes. He has writing ability, plus a strong sense of justice and writes down about his investigation in his notebook called "Watoson memo" (Memo by John H. Watson)[9] to report it to the "Strand Wall Poster". Though in retirement from playing rugby football due to a left leg injury makes him feel down, he pulls himself together with the case of Jefferson Hope ("The First Adventure") and comes to understand Holmes well.[10][11]

Mrs Hudson is a housemother of Baker House. She is jolly and loves singing and baking cookies. Only she calls Holmes by his first name, Sherlock. As Holmes helps her get out of trouble in "The First Adventure", she comes to take a motherly interest in Holmes and Watson.[11][12]

James Moriarty is a tall and blond deputy headmaster of the School who has two different aspects. The right half of his face looks calm, but the other half looks severe. He actually manages the school and is strict with the pupils, especially Holmes who always behaves at his own pace.[13]

Mycroft Holmes is a sixth former of Dealer House, elder brother of Sherlock and a founder of the Diogenes Club in the house.[2][14]

Irene Adler is a school nurse and has an affair with Headmaster Ormstein but takes up with another man, Godfrey Norton who teaches art. Her elegance and sweetness charm male teachers and pupils. She comes to assist the investigation of Holmes and sometimes snaps her fingers at the nose of Holmes.[15]

Gordon Lestrade is a pupil of Cooper House and has an atmosphere of mod. He is a member of the life guidance committee in the school but assists Holmes in his investigation that is disfavoured by teachers, especially Grimesby Roylott who is in charge of giving pupils life guidance.[16][17][18]

Langdale Pike acts an informant to Holmes and is quick at his work but tight with money. He plays a role of Baker Street Irregulars partially though a group of mice form Baker House Irregulars for Holmes. And Sherman, a taxidermist in "The Sign of the Four" is adapted to a female pupil who loves animals and speaks like a boy. She cooperates with Holmes in his investigation.

Adapting the series into puppetry

Kōki Mitani

Mitani loves the stories of Sherlock Holmes so much but didn't agree with the adaption of the series to a puppetry at first for it is hard to describe the details of the investigation by operating puppets. At first he planned to adapt "The Brothers Karamazov" to a puppetry following "The Three Musketeers" broadcast from 2009 to 2010. And he worried that producing "Sherlock Holmes" was too late for "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" gained popularity and "Sherlock" has received a reputation already.[19] Then he planned to make a puppet with the spitting image of Sherlock Holmes drawn by Sidney Paget but gave up it for tall puppet is hard to operate for puppeteer. Finally he made it a show set in a fictional boarding school called "Beeton School". In the show, Sherlock Holmes is a fifteen-year-old schoolboy. Though lots of incidents occurred in the school, there's no murder and same puppets appears many times.[20] According to Mitani, the puppet show becomes to show viewers the full picture as the story progresses and finally they will learn why the show is set in school. And in the show, all of "A Study in Scarlet","The Sign of the Four", "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Valley of Fear" are dramatised and Mitani says it may be the first case in the history of the screen adaption of the Series of Sherlock Holmes.[21]

Mitani said that only real Sherlockian can enjoy the show at the press conference of the show in March, 2014.[20] Though the comment aroused the criticism, he says that what he want to say is that real Shelockian should have playful mind to accept and enjoy any adaption of the series of Sherlock Holmes and the series is worth creating derivative work.[19] He also says that the presence of John Watson as storyteller is so important and it's a splendid invention of Arthur Conan Doyle. Besides he says Watson has warmth and passion that Holmes lacks and appreciates Martin Freeman who acts John with good nature in "Sherlock". In 2007, Freeman appeared in a play "The Last Laugh" based on "University of Laughs"(Warai no daigaku, 笑の大学) written by Mitani.[19]

Puppets and the set of the school

Bunta Inoue

And Mitani says what human play can be played by puppet also.[22] The puppets are designed by Bunta Inoue, a painter.[19] He emphasises the cleverness of Holmes by large ears and broad forehead. Besides he makes the nose of Holmes characteristic[20] as well as that of Holmes in the original.[19] And Mitani also orders Inoue the image of puppets. For example, the image of Sir Henry Baskerville and Stapleton in the episode based on "The Hound of the Baskervilles" are modelled on Prince William and Woody Allen respectively.[19]

Inoue says that he intended to design them to become familiar to children enough and inspire them to draw doodle of the puppets and judged an illustration contest of this show and "The Three Musketeers" held in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo in September 2014. The face of puppet is basically expressionless and directed by lighting as is done in Noh and bunraku.[23] And the hair of male puppets is painted as colourful as the painting of the merry-go-round[24] while shibori is used for that of female puppets.[25]

See also: Beeton School

As the show is produced in Japan, washi is frequently used in a set especially properties including bags, tea set or lanterns whose light is LED lamp. It's also used for trees and the interior as well as cheesecloth and nonwoven fabric to make the atmosphere natural and warm. Besides nonwoven fabric never causes halation in shooting. The appearance of the set is similar to that of dollhouse and the cloister is modeled on that of an abbey in Cotswolds. And the staff are refer to the stained glass in Sherlock Holmes Museum and the building of St Pancras station in constructing the set.[26]

Beeton School has four houses and each of them has its colour such as dark red for Archer, dark blue for Baker, green for Cooper and gray for Dealer. These colours are adopted to the uniforms of pupils.[27] Holmes wears the dark blue one of Baker and hangs a clock and a pair of compasses on his left chest but Watson wears pale brown one, uniform of his former school. In the original image of Inoue, Holmes has a cane whose top is skull and the letters of "Sherlock Holmes" is written on each of his shoe sole using the stick figures in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men".[18][28]

Voice acting

On selecting voice actors/actresses, Mitani asked Koichi Yamadera, an experienced voice actor to voice Holmes. As Holmes is the boy who is difficult get along with in the show, actor with acting ability was needed.[19] Mitani admires Yamadera for he acts the role well as if he were a boy who is naive and sensitive though he is not so in reality.[29]

Like "The Three Musketeers", one voice actor /actress plays multiple role in the show as Masashi Ebara who voices Jim Moriarty and Godfrey Norton and Yuko Sanpei who voices Enoch Drebber, Helen Stoner[30] and Miss Harrison, teacher of mathematics.[31]

In "The Adventure of the Cheerful Four", actors as Masachika Ichimura and Kenji Urai, who are famous for their appearance in musical theatre voice some puppets.

Music and opening theme

Kana Hiaramatsu, a member of Spanish Connection is in charge of music.[32] nano, a singer who also likes the series of Sherlock Holmes performed and wrote the lyrics of the opening theme "Scarlet Story" that deal with "A Study in Scarlet". nano tries to express the inner pains of Holmes who always searches the truth.[33]

The show is produced by using prescoring[19] and projection mapping is used in the title sequence that describes "The Adventure of the Dancing Men".

Playfulness

As well as Mitani's other works, playfulness is included in the show. For example, the episode based on "The Sign of the Four" is adapted into a musical play,[34] each speckle on a snake appears in "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" has the shape of crocus, the flower Holmes mentions in the original.[18] Besides Holmes's violin is on the shelf for personal belongings near his bed.[8] And some words and conversation in the series seem to be based on those in "Sherlock".
