Shooter was a 1988 TV pilot that NBC decided not to pick up as a series. Instead NBC aired the pilot as a TV movie of the week. The film is based on the book "Shooter" by and about Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer David Hume Kennerly. Kennerly had been a combat photo journalist during the Vietnam War. Later he was the White House photographer for president Gerald Ford. The Shooter film followed the adventures of a fictional photo journalist Matt Thompson in Vietnam played by Jeffrey Nordling, in his debut role. The TV pilot was made shortly after Good Morning Vietnam that had been a hit in theaters, and the TV film borrowed two actors from the Good Morning Vietnam cast, Noble Willingham and Cu Ba Nguyen, as well as having a free-spirited protagonist who is constantly clashing with his superiors. The pilot was filmed on location in Thailand. David Hume Kennerly served as executive producer and writer. Gary Nelson directed the film.
