The shooting of Dontre Hamilton occurred on April 30, 2014, when a police officer, Christopher Manney, fatally shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, at Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park. Hamilton disarmed Manney of his baton and beat the officer over the head with it. Hamilton was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. Police Chief Edward Flynn fired Manney in October, saying he had instigated the fight with an inappropriate pat-down. The district attorney found the use of force to be in self-defense and declined to prosecute.[1][2][3]
Though no criminal charges were brought, the police officer involved was fired after the incident, which was questioned and upheld by a panel of Fire and Police Commissioners without explanation. A federal investigation is ongoing as of April 2015 to determine whether there were any civil rights violations.[4]
