There are several candidates for the shortest river in the world, or in a geographic area.
Asia.
- Tamborasi, river in Southeast Sulawesi in Indonesia The length is about 20 meters.

- Ombla, river near Dubrovnik in Croatia. The length is about 30 meters
- Aril River, shortest river of Italy (near Lago di Garda): 175 meters
- Fiumelatte River, Italy, at 250 meters
- Norrström, Sweden, connecting Mälaren to the Baltic Sea at the Riksdag building
- Reprua River, Georgia, 27 meters
- River Bain, North Yorkshire
- Vrelo, Serbia, 365 meters
- Kovasselva river on the island Hitra in Norway connects the lake Kovassvatnet to the sea. The length is about 20 metres (depending on the tide).
North America.
- Roe River, Great Falls, Montana, United States, at 61 meters (201 feet).
- Rio Los Patos, Barahona, Dominican Republic, at 61 meters
- D River, Oregon, United States, at 130 meters
- Chute River, Maine, United States, at 320 meters

South America.
- Azuis River, Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, Brazil, at 147 meters. This river is the shortest river of Brazil.
- Correntoso River, Villa La Angostura, Neuquén, Argentina, at 200–300 meters (depending on the height of the neighbouring lakes Correntoso and Nahuel Huapi). This river is the shortest river of Argentina.
