The Sierrita Mine is a large copper mine located in the Sierrita Mountains of Arizona, in the southwestern part of the United States. Sierrita was operated by Phelps Dodge until 2007 when it was acquired by Freeport-McMoRan for $25.9 billion in cash and stock to create the world's largest publicly traded copper mining company. The mine represents one of the largest copper reserves in the United States and in the world. The deposit had estimated reserves (in 2006) of 907 million metric tons of ore grading 0.26% copper and 0.03% molybdenum along with additional 2.4 billion tons at 0.21% copper and 0.02% molybdenum.[1]
The mine is located in southern Pima County, southwest of Tucson and west of Green Valley-Sahuarita.
