Silas Condict

Silas Condict (March 7, 1738 September 6, 1801) was an American farmer, prominent surveyor, and large landowner from Morris County, New Jersey. He served as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress from 1781 to 1783. Later, he served a number of terms in the State Assembly, and was its Speaker in 1792-1794 and in 1797.

Silas's parents were Peter Condict and Phebe Dodd of Newark, N.J., of Peter Condict (also spelled Cundit and Cundict), and Mary Harrison (of Samuel), of John Cunditt, the family ancestor to America (1678) from Wales, from England of Norman descent. Silas married first Phebe Day and had one child, Elizabeth Phebe, who married James Cook of Morristown. He married second, Abigail Byram ( of Ebenezer Byram & Abigail Alden, great granddaughter of John Alden and Pricilla Mullins of the Mayflowers) as cited in the 1885 and 1916 genealogy books by Jotham Halsey Condit and Eben Condit, who used their last name of Condit, (adopted by many but not all in the lineage) for indexing purposes in the "Genealogical Record of the Condit Family, Descendants of John Cunditt, 1678-1885," The authors however acknowledged the old family name of Cunditt and Condict., and Condict is in on John's gravestone along with his son, Peter's, and his grandchildren which included Peter Condict, Silas' father. Silas Condict died in Morristown, New Jersey and is buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Morristown. His nephew, Lewis Condict, and great-grandson, Augustus W. Cutler, would later serve in the U.S. Congress.

There is a large park (over 1500 acres) in Morris County, named for him.
