In June 2014, Meredith suffered severe headaches whilst umpiring a game between Sydney and Port Adelaide. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage or bleeding on his brain. He spent over a week in hospital, not even changing out of his umpiring clothes for two days, before returning to Melbourne. He is expected to be fully recover and hopes to be umpiring again in the coming month.[3]

On Tuesday 23 September 2014, the AFL Umpiring Department announced that Meredith along with Matt Stevic and Mathew Nicholls would officiate the 2014 Toyota AFL Grand Final.
