Sir Charles Kao UTC is a University Technical College located on the Harlow College campus in Harlow, Essex which opened in September 2014.[1] It is named after the Nobel prize winning scientist Charles K. Kao who worked and studied at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow.

Admissions

Sir Charles Kao UTC accepts students aged 14–19 years and had its first intake of 14- and 16-year-old (academic years 10 and 12) pupils in 2014.

The primary catchment area of Sir Charles Kao UTC covers Harlow, Epping, Loughton, Waltham Abbey, Bishops Stortford and the surrounding areas.

Curriculum

Sir Charles Kao UTC specialises in medical technology[2] and smart environments.[3] Students in Key Stage 4 study a number of GCSEs covering the core curriculum, along with Engineering and Computer Science.[4] Students in Key Stage 5 are given the option to study A Levels, BTEC Extended Diploma or a combination of both.[5]

Sponsors

The UTC's academic sponsors are Harlow College and Anglia Ruskin University. The UTC is also sponsored by local businesses including Johnson Controls, Pearson Education, Raytheon, GlaxoSmithKline and Princess Alexandra Hospital.[6]
