"Sixteen Saltines" is the second single from Jack White's 2012 solo album Blunderbuss. It was when White first played this song on Saturday Night Live that the album had a surge in popularity.[1]

In December 2012, the song was named by Rolling Stone as the eighth-best song of the year.[2]

History

White conceived the idea of this song from a conversation he had with his daughter. In an interview with NME, he explained, "My daughter asked for a snack, and I said, 'What do you want to have?', and she said, 'I think I'll have 16 saltine crackers.' And I said, 'You'll have three!' At times I imagined that character was eating cracker rations on a lifeboat and he's remembering all these other things."

Editions

As part of his Third Man Records vinyl records visual and physical concepts, he as made the 12" version of Sixteen Saltines the first record ever filled with liquid.[3] The system is in fact two transparent vinyl sides with a thin air room in between the two parts in which floats the blue liquid.[4] The 7" is also available in classic tri-colour[5][6] like most of the Third Man Records' 7". There is also an unlimited regular black vinyl edition of the same release in 12" and 7".

Music video

In the music video directed by AG Rojas,[7] White sits on a windowsill with his hands tied in front of him with rope as two men painted white surround him while a boy painted in blue watches. The video also contains various clips of children doing random activities and ends with Jack White then tied up in a vehicle that the boy painted in blue is about to set on fire, but the video is cut before any fire is seen.[1]
