Smart Wall Paint is a company that manufactures a paint by the same name. The paint can be applied to any flat surface to turn it into a reusable whiteboard. It was developed by Irish entrepreneur Ronan Clarke and has won three awards - two for innovation and one for product of the year.[1][2]

History

Smart Wall Paint founder and managing director Ronan Clarke, from Arklow, County Wicklow, worked in the construction sector prior to establishing the company in 2011.[3][4] The company is located in Dublin, Ireland and around 90 per cent of its market is exports, with main customers being businesses and education institutions.[3]

Products development

Smart Wall Paint's whiteboard paint was developed within Dublin Institute of Technology’s Centre for Research in Engineering Surface Technology (CREST).[5][6] The company has been involved in an Enterprise Ireland-backed innovation partnership with CREST to enable the further product expansion beyond the original whiteboard paint.[7] The paint is odourless, non-toxic and can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including walls, tabletops and glass. It works with whiteboard and dry-wipe markers.[3] In July 2013, the company launched a clear version of the whiteboard paint.[8]

Awards

Smart Wall Paint won the 2013 David Manley Award in the business category.[9] Founder and CEO Ronan Clarke also won the best investment proposal at the 2013 Docklands Innovation Awards.[10][11] In 2014, Smart Wall Paint won Facilities Management Product of the Year at the European Office Products Awards.[2]
