Sofia Imber
Sofia Imber is a Venezuelan journalist and supporter of the arts.
Early life
She was born in Soroca, Moldavia on May 8, 1924 to Jewish parents. Imber moved to Venezuela with her family when she was four years old.[1] Imber married Venezuelan journalist and diplomat Guillermo Meneses.[1] Her sister was Lya Imber, the first woman who received a medical degree in Venezuela. Imber has three daughters Sara, Adriana, Daniela Meneses Imber and a son Pedro Guillermo who died 2014.[2]
Career
Imber began her career as a journalist.[1] Imber cultivated connections in the art world while Meneses was stationed in Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium as a diplomat.[1] With her second husband, Carlos Rangel, she hosted a political talk show Buenos Dias.[1]
Imber is the founder of the "Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas" (Contemporary Art Museum of Caracas).[3] In 2001, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez dismissed Imber as head of the museum.[3]
In 2014, Venezuelan American Endowment for the Arts awarded Imber the Páez Medal of Art 2014 for her work as an advocate for art throughout Latin America.[4]
