   Soorappallam is a village located 1 km away from Pattukkottai town in Tanjore district in TamilNadu state in India on the way to Mannargudi and Kumbakonam via Vadaseri.
      Soorappallam, a part of Pattukkottai taluk, is most fertile as the land is with rich content of alluvial soil, deposited by the river flowing across the region through Kallanai canal which is one of the distributaries for the Cauvery river.

Population

In this village, The total population is 2556 as per the census operation in 2001 of which 1255 are male & 1301 are female, 14.62% of the population (326 persons of which 163 are Male & 163 are Female) are in the age group of 0-6.

Festivals

Arulmihu Soora Mahakaliamman Temple is about 900 year old temple which is situated towards the north in front of Bank of "The Ganges River". In this temple, the festival is celebrated for 15 days on every Tamil month of "Vaikasi(may-june)". During the festival time, village people won't stay in others villages. Each street has its own festival time i.e.,Manadakapadi. The Goddess is coming to the Main temple other than the festival time, the Goddess worshipped at another temple. At first, the Goddess hand is tied with turmeric and rope. This function is called as “KAAPUKATTUTHAL".

   On that day, the food with meat is thrown upwards for wicked and the food does not come towards the earth. This wonderful event happens every year and it is witnessed by the village people.

From next eighth day, the festival starts. Each 'Mandakapadi' is celebrated by each set of people. The Goddess is coming around (Arul Ula or veethi ula) throughout the village for seven days. The vehicle of Sooramahakaliamman is changed for each two days. On first two days, the Goddess comes with the vehicle of Hamsa(Lion). Sooramahakaliamman comes with swan vehicle on Third and fourth day, and surabhi(kamadhenu) vehicle on fifth and sixth day. Finally, cow(bull), which represents peaceful comes with Goddess. Eighth day is "vennaithali", which is common for all set of people. The Next Day is a special occasion for all devotees. The people pray the Goddess and tie a pole with ropes attached for carrying on shoulder gifts to a temple (KAVADI). This function is called as "KAVADI YEDUTHAL". The next day is a wonderful day because of car festival.

Car Festival (Thooku Ther):

Car festival involves devotees building a large cart with bamboo and wood having two teak woods as its base, decorates with flowers, flags. This is most famous festival held in this temple initiates enthusiasm, when hundreds of devotees gather to lift the chariot and be blessed. Chariot festivals is called as "THOOKKU THER" vizha. Hundreds of men will lift the ther(Car). They come around one kilometer from the temple. Finally they reach the temple. The function is very popular in surrounding areas which is celebrated here only in all over TamilNadu. [1]

Full Moon Day:

A special Paal Abhishekam (a ceremony of ablutions and symbolic offerings, symbolizing spiritual purification) is held for Goddess ShriSooraMahakalaimman at this Amman Temple on every full moon day. In the first stage the Abhishekam is performed by oil and Abhishekam by water followed. It is a surprise that after pouring of water for Abhishekam.Abhishekam honey, fruits,vibhuti, kumkum, milk and thunder coconut are poured over the Goddess to please her. After that it is distributed to devotees. Homam is addressed to Goddess Almighty and our through that fire offerings are given by chanting mantras. The devotees are lighting Ghee lamps on that day.Special pooja is held on every full moon day.

Santhana Kappu:

The festival is celebrated for one day(Friday ) on every Tamil month of "Aadi". On the day Abhishekam is performed by sandal and all other things followed during that time.

Devotees come to this temple with the main purpose of getting marriages happily settled in the families. Their prayers are granted by the Goddess Shri Sooramahakaliamman. The people who don’t have child, they will come to this temple and they are blessed with children. If you come, you will receive blessings from the Almighty and your wishes will be fulfilled.

Education

          In this village, The literacy rate is 70.58% against the national literacy rate of 65.38% and state literacy rate of 73.47%.

Employment

In this village, historically, the main occupation has been cultivation, and it provides employment for most of the people as the water resource is available either by Bore-Well pumps or water flowing in the Cauvery river as this village lies in the tail-end area of the delta region formed by the cauvery river and other water resources that includes a great lake and many ponds. The crops cultivated here are groundnut, sesame, coconut, black gram, maize, sugarcane and banana tree while the main crop is paddy(rice). But nowadays, it is evident that the importance for the agriculture goes on decreasing due to many factors. Some of them are rain deficiency, not receiving water in time from mettur dam, not getting the affordable price for the yielded grains,and soaring labour cost. Many village youngsters have been leaving for and working in many foreign countries such as USA, UK, Singapore, Malaysia,and Middle East etc. as they claim this is the best way to earn a large amount of money in very short time that easily outweighs the revenue in agriculture.

Climate

        As basically India is a tropical country, This village is very hot in summer season (April–July) and the rainy season lies in three months from October to December.As this village is located in Tanjore district, a coastal district in Tamilnadu state, this village receives about 80% of total annual rainfall in rainy season. Thanks to the North-East monsoon blowing from the Bay of Bengal.  The Bay of Bengal is just 14 km (8.7 mi) from this village in Adirampattinam town.
