Sophie Duarte (born 31 July 1981 in Rodez, Aveyron) is a French runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
She finished fifth at the 2007 World Championships, in her major international debut. Her finishing time of 9:27.51 minutes was also a new French record. In December 2013, she won the individual gold medal at European Cross Country Championships, at Belgrade.
Biographiy
Elle ran at first for SATUC, à l'ECLA Albi in 2003, then l'Olympique de Marseille Athlétisme from 2004 to 2005, then for l'AES Nanterre in 2006, l'Alès Cévennes Athlétisme in 2007 then CP Joinville from 2008 to 2010, et since 2010 at the club of CA Balma.[1]
In 2007 she was selected for the 2007 French National Athletic team at the World Championships. She holds the French record in the 3,000 m steeplechase since 27 August 2007, at the Worlds championships she ran 9:27.51, beating her French record by 2 seconds. She finished fifth in this competition.
She participated in the 3 000 m steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Games and finished 7th in the heats.
On 10 July 2009, Sophie Duarte bettered her French reocrd running 9:25.62 at the Golden Gala meet at Rome.[2] Qualifying for the 2009 World Championshps at Berlin, she finished initially 15th in the final. On 19 November 2015, the Spaniard Marta Dominguez, who initially won the championship at these Games, was disqualified for doping. Duarte was reclassified in 14th position[3] · .[4]
In 2010, Sophie was in the final of the European Championships at Barcelona where she finished 7th.
By reason of an injury she did not run in the London 2012 Olympics in the 3000 steeplechase.
Since 2013 she has been trained by David Heath , a former English international, in cross country.
Sophie established a new personal best at the 5000m running 15:14 at the meeting of Areva de Paris and qualified herself for the World Championships at Moscow in 2013 . This same year , she had success at cross country at her first Cross Country Championship where she placed 16th, 2nd among Europeans.
Several months later , she won the European Cross Country championship.
2014 was a good year for Sophie where she established a new record at the 10 km running 31:53 and qualified herself for 10000m at European Championships at Zurich.
