Soumodip Sarkar
Soumodip Sarkar (b. 13 June 1965 in Jamshedpur, India) is a noted economist and management researcher. He is an associate professor at the Department of Management, University of Évora, Portugal, where he is the Dean of the Doctoral School (IIFA). Previously he was the Director for the Centre of Advanced Studies in Management and Economics, (CEFAGE-UE),[1] as well as the coordinator of the Program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Professor Sarkar is considered one of the top 100 experts on the management and economics of innovation by the World Economic Forum (WEF Innovation 100).[2][3]
He studied Economics at the University of Calcutta, graduating 1988, and received his MSc and PhD in Economics from Northeastern University, Boston in 1991 and 1995, respectively. He previously worked at the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) and later in the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Research
His research interests are international business, innovation and entrepreneurship. He has published papers in several scientific journals and is in the editorial board of four international scientific journals. He is a project leader in many Portuguese and European projects and has worked internationally in many countries including India, the USA, Mozambique, Angola, Vietnam, Brazil, Portugal and Greece. He holds copyrights to the integrated innovation model developed by him along with simulation software designed for business diagnostics.
One of his main contribution has been a theory and integrated framework of market archetypes for planning, developing and predicting outcomes in innovation in companies. He has also contributed to the empirical study of factors in outsourcing of services and innovation behaviour in several industries. He holds copyrights to the model developed, along with simulation software currently awaiting patent approval in the United States.
He was a visiting fellow at the Harvard University Asia Center, in 2006. His book on innovation entitled: Innovation, Market Archetypes and Outcome was published in 2007 by Springer-Verlag. Another book on entrepreneurship and innovation Empreendedorismo e Inovação, published in Portuguese, by Escolar Editora, was released in September 2007. In 2008 was published his third book on the Entrepreneurial Innovator, published by Elsevier-Campus in Brazil.
Dr Sarkar has lectured widely and conducted workshops all over the world, and has been invited to speak, among other places, at the Helsinki School of Economics, Harvard University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Indian School of Management. etc. He has also given many motivational talks on innovation for senior managers and organisations all over the world as well as advising firms on innovation management and growth.
Dr Sarkar has done high level technical consultancy work at several institutions, such as USAID, Harvard University and firms Dun & Bradstreet and Nathan Associates (USA). From 2003 to 2007 Dr. Sarkar wrote monthly columns on economics for the Executive Digest and the Diário de Notícias newspaper (Lisbon, Portugal).
