History

South Davidson High School started originally as Denton High School. Denton High School started in 1929, as part of a plan to bring a public high school to southern Davidson County. Denton Elementary School now stands where the old high school was in the 1920s. Denton High School remained in the town of Denton, NC until 1988. The outdated and overcrowded building was changed to an elementary school, and a new high school was built one mile north of town to its current location, and opened in 1989. In 2009, a new wing was opened, including a new band room, new administrative offices, and 8 new classrooms.

Athletics

SDHS is in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, in the Yadkin Valley 1-A Conference and has teams in Wrestling, soccer, basketball, football, tennis, softball, baseball, track and field, cross country, and golf.

The South Davidson basketball teams have been very successful the past several years. The girls basketball team won 3 straight Yadkin Valley Conference tournament titles between 2011-13, as well as being ranked in the top 10 in 1A constantly. The boys basketball team had a lot of success the past couple seasons as well. On December 21, 2010, the Wildcats beat Central Davidson High School 70-69 in double overtime, this was the first time South had beaten Central in almost 20 years. They won their 1st ever NewBridge Bank Christmas Classic over East Davidson High School 96-72. The Wildcats also scored 113 points on Gray Stone Day School on January 17, 2012.

The SDHS Cross Country Team won the state title in 2000.[1] The SDHS Track and field 3200 meter relay team won the state title in 2001.[2]

Caroline Smith, a swimmer at South Davidson, was a 2008 Olympic Trial qualifier. She was a 5x North Carolina state high school champion, high school All-American, and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. She earned a scholarship to Florida State University, where she was a 2x ACC Honor Roll student, as well as holding swimming records at FSU.
