South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union is a Florida intrastate credit union headquartered in and serving the Miami area. The credit union has seven branches throughout Miami-Dade County serving over 57,000 members. Assets total over $671 million.[1]

Corporate history

The financial cooperative was founded as Dade County School Employees Federal Credit Union, National Credit Union Administration charter number 176, in 1935. Originally, membership was restricted to employees and family members of the then Dade County Public School System. The name was changed to Dade County School Employees Federal Credit Union to reflect the acceptance of Miami-Dade College employees as members in 1972. In 2000, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami-Dade College students became eligible for membership, and the credit union again changed its name to reflect this.

Hubert O. Sibley had been the President and CEO of the credit union since 1950 A public elementary school has been named after him. After 54 years, in 2004, Sibley retired and was succeeded by William Page, who had been vice-president since 1974. In January 2013, Michael DiBenedetto was named the new President of South Florida Educational FCU, following the retirement of William C. Page. Previously DiBenedetto was the Executive Vice President of Administration at First Light Federal Credit Union, in El Paso, Texas.

The credit union's annual scholarship program for Miami-Dade Public School students is named in Sibley's honor.[2]
