In addition, Newsweek Magazine just released their list of top U.S. High schools for 2009. SOHS made the top 1500 (number 753) high schools. This ranking put them in the top 6% of the public high schools in the nation.

South Oldham High School was named as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence 13 years ago.

SOHS also met 10 of 10 target goals in the 2008 Yearly Progress Report for "No Child Left Behind".

In 2010, the journalism program at SOHS was awarded Grand Champion at the yearly Kentucky High School Journalism Association (KHSJA) convention for the second year in a row. The yearbook (The Draconium), the newspaper (The Dragon's Tale) and the broadcast journalism classes all took first place in the AAA division that year. This makes SOHS's journalism program the best high school journalism program in the state of Kentucky. The 2010 contest marked SOHS' fourth Grand Champion award in 5 years (2006, 2007, 2009).
