South View High School is a high school in Hope Mills, North Carolina. It is a member of Cumberland County Schools (CSS). It serves students from Ninth through Twelfth grade. Adjacent to South View High School is South View Middle School. Enrollment of students is approximately 1900, placing the school under the NCHSAA 4-AA classification. South View has a rich history in athletic and academic excellence.
Academics
Academic programs in the school include the International Baccalaureate Academy and the Academy of Public Safety and Security. The graduating class of 2007 received 2.6 million dollars in scholarships alone. The principal is Brian Edkins as of 2010.
Athletics
With the girls' Basketball team winning the 2007 NCHSAA 4A Title. The Men's Cross Country team has won the Conference Championship 15 years consecutively, the Eastern Regional three times in the past five years, winning runner-up the other two times, and won the 4A Cross Country title in 2003 while receiving runner-up in 2002 and has placed in the Top 10 all other years. The Women's Cross Country team is also a force to be reckoned with winning their share of Eastern Regionals and Conference Championships. Both Men's and Women's Outdoor Track has won Conference Championships ten years in a row. The football team at South View is the center of all attention during the fall season. The team has consistently won Conference Championships and has reached the state title game numerous times winning the title in 1991. The softball team was coached by the Mayor of Hope Mills, Eddie Dees before stepping down in 2007. Regardless, he still holds the record for most wins in North Carolina softball history.
Band
The South View Tiger Marching Band, formerly under the direction of Jay Bolder, is one of the largest bands in Cumberland County with 130 members. The band, under the direction of Matthew Jorgensen starting as of the 2011 school year, has previously accumulated over 30 Superior ratings from the North Carolina MPA Festival in just 12 years. The Tiger Marching Band actively began participating outside of football games in 1994. Since then, the program has grown to win numerous Grand Champion awards, including five in 2005 and 2009. The band has participated in prestigious events like the ABC6/Boscov Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, the Gator Bowl, Disney World Spectromagic parade, NBC 17's live morning broadcast of "Your Town: Fayetteville," and the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. It has also won the honor of being a Grammy School. The Jazz Band has also been a very respected program being invited to perform at the 2009 NCMEA Conference in Winston-Salem and winning numerous awards at NCCU Jazz Festival, Carolina Jazz Festival, the 2008 Savannah Music Festival, and other festivals throughout the state.
Chorus
The South View High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Richard Butler, tours annually and has performed at such prestigious venues as Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, Candlelight Concerts at Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Concert Choir consistently performs classical major works which have included Mozart's "Regina Coeli", Schubert's "Mass in G", Vivaldi's "Gloria", Bach's "For Us a Child Is Born", and the Christmas portion of Handel's "Messiah". The Show Choir performs popular selections with choreography at a variety of community events, and joins the Concert Choir in the performance of classical major works. Both choirs perform in combination with the beginning choir at annual events including Fall and Spring Concerts, a Holiday Cabaret, Homecoming, Baccalaureate and Graduation Ceremonies. Alumni regularly attend and support performances and in time-honored tradition are invited to join the combined choirs on stage to finish each performance with "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by Peter Lutkin. Alumni are also actively involved in the singing of the National Anthem with the combined choirs at every Homecoming Football Game.
