Southern Lehigh High School is a four-year public high school located in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is the only high school in the Southern Lehigh School District.
The school's mascot is the Spartan, and the school colors are blue and white.
History
Southern Lehigh was built in 1955. Before that, students in the district attended high school at Allentown High School and elementary school at Coopersburg Elementary School.
Academics
Southern Lehigh has a high graduation rate. The school has an 96 percent graduation rate, with average SAT scores of 513 for writing, 535 for mathematics, and 526 for reading.
Southern Lehigh requires 26 credits in order to graduate. 4 credits of social studies, 4 credits of English, 3 or 4 credits of science, 3 or 4 credits of math, 4 credits for physical education, 1.8 credits for drivers education/health, and the rest of the credits are used for electives. Students are required to take a minimum of 6.6 credits and a maximum of 7.6 credits per year.
In the 2013-2014 school year, Southern Lehigh began block scheduling. Classes are every other day. There are six days in a cycle. Two different schedules are used, one on odd-numbered days (1, 3, or 5) and the other on even-numbered days (2, 4, or 6). Block 1 is 82 minutes long. Blocks 2 and 4 are 77 minutes long. Block 3 is 111 minutes long (with three 30-minute lunch periods). A 42 minute Spartan Period has been added in the middle of the day for students to get extra help or do certain activities according to their interests.
Athletics
Southern Lehigh provides a variety of sports. For boys, baseball, basketball, cross county, football, golf, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling is provided. For girls, basketball, cross county, field hockey, football, lacrosse, tennis, softball, swimming, cheerleading, track & field, volleyball, and winter track is provided.
The school's athletic teams belong to Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District XI[1] and most sports belong to the district's Colonial League.
Southern Lehigh won the 1998 state championship in field hockey.
Southern Lehigh won the Colonial League football championship in 2013 and 2014.
Student organizations and clubs
First robotics team
Southern Lehigh High School's First Robotics Team, the Spartechs,[2] has participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2002. The Spartechs' team number is 834.[3]
