Splashtop Remote remote-desktop software allows users to connect to and control computers from a mobile-computing device, such as an iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Unlike products using the Remote Desktop Protocol, Splashtop Remote uses a proprietary protocol capable of delivering real-time video and audio to the remote user.

Recognition

Splashtop Remote Desktop has received wide recognition due to its capabilities to deliver multimedia over a remote connection. Mainstream press coverage includes reviews in The New York Times,[1] Financial Times,[2] and PC Magazine,[3] as well as trade press and blogs. Data from June and July 2011:

Functionality

Splashtop Remote Desktop maps the screen of the mobile device to the screen of the remote computer, so that users can interact with the remote computer using intuitive touch-to-click controls and zoom in using the pinch gesture. Gestures are used to replace mouse and keyboard controls. For example, a two-finger drag gesture is used to scroll within windows, generally mapping to the mouse wheel controller. iPhone or iPad native software keyboard, modified to include special keys, such as Ctrl, Alt, or Delete, is used for text input.

The product can establish connections between devices connected to a variety of networks, such as Wi-Fi or 3G - no proximity between devices is required.

Compatibility

The current versions of Splashtop Streamer are available for Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and 7, including the Home Premium versions, which do not support RDP. Splashtop also has support for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion).[4]

The Splashtop Remote Desktop client application is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch from the Apple App Store, as well as Android (including Kindle Fire and NOOK), HP TouchPad, BlackBerry PlayBook, Windows and Mac.

Open source components

Although Splashtop Remote Desktop is a proprietary application, certain software modules used in the product are available[5] under a variety of open source licenses.
