SpotCam Co., Ltd. is a Taiwanese technology company headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. The company is known for its cloud based Wi-Fi video monitoring cameras: SpotCam HD, SpotCam HD Pro, and SpotCam HD Eva, that allows people view live feeds through SpotCam’s cloud-based service on a mobile or web browsers. In 2015 it was selected to join the Microsoft Bizspark incubation program [1] and also received funding from the angel program that was initiated by Executive Yuan of the Taiwanese government.[2][3]
History
Security industry veteran Jacky Lin together with a group of software engineers and camera hardware engineers founded SpotCam in 2013 in Taipei. Jacky Lin serves as SpotCam’s CEO.[4] The team began its business by in-house design of the camera's hardware and software, and launched its first product the SpotCam HD in late 2014, through FlyingV, the biggest crowdfunding site in Taiwan. The result of this crowdfunding was successful and raised $20,000.[5]
By end of 2014, SpotCam cameras were officially launched on EC channels as well as retail stores in Taiwan and soon expanded to other EC platforms in Japan, ASEAN, EMEA, USA, Canada, and India.[6][7] SpotCam received early funding from Executive Yuan of the Taiwanese government and its own startup team members. In January 2016, SpotCam's capital was at $0.3 million. SpotCam hosts cloud data through the Amazon Web Services and is the only brand in the market that provides full-time continuous cloud recording for free.[8][9] SpotCam is used by people who love to watch over their properties, pets and children when they are away from home,[10][11][12] Jacky Lin has said, “We want to make SpotCam different from others by providing free recording service, so SpotCam owners can enjoy full functions without subscription cost.” [13][14]
Products
SpotCam provides free live streaming video and full-time video recording for 24 hours (auto recycling to keep latest 24 hours of video data on a rolling basis) which are accessible through a web app and mobile apps for iOS and Android.[15][16] SpotCam sends encrypted data to the cloud and then securely streams the video. Video streams are private by default. SpotCam currently offers three video monitoring camera models, the SpotCam HD, SpotCam HD Pro, and SpotCam HD Eva.All three models offer HD 720P video resolution, two-way audio, night vision, motion and sound detection, scheduling and 4x zoom capability and a 110-degree field of view.[17]
In February 2015, SpotCam released a new version of its camera, the SpotCam HD Pro [18] Later in March 2016, SpotCam launched a pan/tilt type camera, SpotCam HD Eva,a cloud based pan/tilt camera that can do 360 degrees pan and 70 degrees tilt.[19] SpotCam sells its products online in the US, Germany, United Kingdom, as well as through distribution channels and retailers. It is also available in Indonesia and Asia Pacific.[20]
Cloud Recording
The Cloud Recording service automatically saves video on a rolling basis and allows Users to review the past 1/3/7 days or a month of footage. All users, with or without the service, can still view the live feed. SpotCam allows users to download the video and create video clips while also allowing for the creation of a public stream. User can choose to download video in normal speed or in time-lapse format.[21]
As part of SpotCam's free service, markers are placed on a user's video timeline on web browser or mobile app when motion or audio is detected, so a user can view specific events. SpotCam can be configured into sleep mode and streams only when events of motion and audio are detected.[22]
