The St. John's Convention Centre, located in Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador at 50 New Gower Street is the province's largest convention centre with 18,200 square feet (1,900 sq m) of space.[1] The convention centre was completed in May 2001 along with Mile One Centre, which is located across the road and linked by a pedway system.[2] The centre is also linked with the Delta Hotel, which supplies catering for events.[3]

When the Convention Centre was constructed it was built directly on top of what was roughly the middle of George Street. This resulted in the creation of two separate streets: the popular George Street, known for its record number of bars and pubs, and George Street West, which is home to a number of businesses, residences and a church.

Expansion

In April 2009, a report was completed on the expansion and redevelopment of the Convention Centre. The report recommended that the convention centre be expanded to 34,650 square feet (3,219 m2) of rentable space.[4] In December 2009, a request for proposals was placed to find a qualified firm to develop a concept plan for the expansion and redevelopment of the centre.[5] On 31 August 2011, the federal, provincial and municipal governments announced $45 million to expand the convention centre.[6]

Construction on the new St. John's Convention Centre is on schedule for completion in December 2015.
