The Emblem of St.Joseph's PU College

St. Joseph’s Pre-University College located in Bangalore, India is managed by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Catholic religious order founded by St. Ignatius Loyola. The members of the society of Jesus run educational institutions all over the world.

St. Joseph's Pre- University College, Bangalore, is managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES). The BJES executes the objectives of the Jesuit philosophy of education.[1] Map

The institution became independent in 2001 after the Government of Karnataka decided that pre-university studies would be separate from graduate studies. Graduate studies in science is now taught by St. Joseph's College while graduate programs in commerce are taught by St. Joseph's College of Commerce.[2]

History

The Society of Jesus was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. One of the mission objectives was the education of youth around the world with the motto "For the Greater Glory of God". St. Joseph's College was started by French Foreign Missionary Fathers in 1882 with a goal to impart higher education. The management of the college was handed over in 1937 to the Jesuits of Karnataka Province.[2]

Emblem & Motto

The emblem dates was made by the French Foreign Missionary Fathers in 1882. The emblem consists of two scrolls- the one on top of the crown is inscribed with the motto in Latin, "Fide et Labore". The other scroll is placed below the leaves and bears the name of the institution. The shield consists of the cross which is symbolic of the catholic faith and there are two bees on either side of the cross representing toil/hard work. The crown above the shield represents supremacy and glory while the palm leaves below the shield represents victory.


The motto of the institution is "Fide et Labore" which means Faith and Toil in Latin.[2]
