"St Joseph’s Catholic High School, Business and Enterprise College", colloquially known as "St. Joseph’s" or "St.Joe‘s" to the kids, is a Roman Catholic secondary school in Workington, Cumbria. It is the only Catholic secondary school in Workington, the other two secondary schools being Stainburn School and Southfield Technology College.[1]
The current headteacher is Tom Ryan and the Chair of Governors is Peter Hayes.[2]
History
The school has stood on the same site since it opened in 1929 until this day however the building has received a number of alterations, such as the addition of various extra blocks, an Astro Turf, a new library,a canteen extension,a separate building for English lessons,plus a move around and adaptation of most of the classrooms throughout the school. It also acquired a specialism in Business and Enterprise and, more recently, embarked on a Leading Edge program in Drama.[3]
Buildings
The school has many separate buildings. The four-storey block houses a lot of classrooms, namely for Science lessons, History and Geography lessons as well as having offices for members of staff. There is also a main hall, a sports centre with fitness gym and sports hall, a Business and Enterprise Centre with a conference room,2 large and 1 small ict rooms.the art department contains 2 large classrooms and a small section for computors,the DT block has three classrooms,one for resistant materials,one for graphic design and one for catering,a building dedicated to teaching English called "the banklands" holds many classrooms,toilets and a small kitchen,the music hall is a separate building with many instruments and offer lessons to anyone willing to pay for them.
The school today
The school has a thriving charity group which deals with the school’s charity work. Some of the charity,s our school get,s involved with our homes for deprived job thef,s or one of our more popular charity,s build a raft for a Muslim raised over £9,000 over the past two years.[4] There are also sports teams and various performance groups, such as St. Joseph’s Drama Society and the School Band.[5]
