The Parish Church Of Saint Mary The Virgin commonly referred to as St. Mary's by locals, is the parish church for the town of Uttoxeter. The present structure dates from 1877, although the spire dates from the 15th century. The church is Grade II* Listed.[2] This is one of two Anglican churches within the parish, the other is also St Mary's but is commonly called 'The Heath Church' to avoid confusion.
History
Originally built in the 15th century it has been rebuilt several times since, with the present structure dating from 1877. During the English Civil War the church was used to house royalists. By 1828 it was deemed too small and so was rebuilt then by architect James Trubshaw.[3] It was renovated again in 1877.[4]
Profile
The church is the main church in the Deanery of Uttoxeter and the Archdeaconry of Stoke-on-Trent, after that it is in the Diocese of Lichfield. It is part of the Uttoxeter Area of parishes along with Bramshall, Checkley, Gratwich, Kingstone, Leigh, Marchington, Marchington Woodlands, Stramshall and Uttoxeter Heath Church. The current acting vicar is Rev Sue Willetts. Recently there has been a new Sunday service, informally known as the eleven o'clock, designed for the younger Christian.
