Founding

St. Stephens was formed when Allen Frye, Peace Academy, Lail, Sandy Ridge, and Cloninger combined into one school.

St. Stephens High School first opened in the fall of 1934, with Mr. R. N. Hoyle serving as the first teacher and school principal. The first school building was used by both high school and elementary school students until 1953 when a new building was provided specifically for the high school students.

Current State

Today the school is rated in the top ten percentile of all schools within the state of North Carolina. As of 2016, the principal is Mr. Scottie Houston. St. Stephens now enrolls approximately 1,250 students each year.

The elementary schools in the St. Stephens attendance area are St. Stephens, Clyde Campbell, Webb A. Murray, and Snow Creek. Sweetwater elementary which was another feeder school closed at the end of the 2009 school year and Snow Creek Elementary opened in the 2009-2010. Rising 9th graders come from Harry M. Arndt Middle School.

The colors of the school are red, black, gray, and white. Their mascot is the American Indian and the name of their school yearbook is "The Corona".
