St. Xavier's College, Maitighar on Facebook

St. Xavier's College is a Catholic educational institution in Nepal run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It offers intermediate level high school courses (grades 11 and 12) through to the Cambridge A-levels and 10+2 programmes, as well as bachelor's and master's degrees in natural science, business, social science, and humanities. Besides Maitighar College the Jesuits in Nepal also run St. Xavier schools in Godaveri, Jawalakhel, and Jhapa, and Moran Memorial School in Jhapa.

History

The College began as the intermediate level of St. Xavier's School, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, and moved to Maitighar, Kathmandu, in 1988.[1] For the first eight years the only course offered was Intermediate in Science, in affiliation with Tribhuvan University. In 1996 the three-year Bachelor of Science in Social Work, the first of its kind in Nepal, was established in conjunction with Kathmandu University. In 1997 a B.S. in Environmental Science was offered but after three years discontinued admitting students. Since then bachelor's degrees have been added in Business Studies and Physics in 2002, in Information Management in 2003, and in 2007 in Computer Science and Information Technology, Microbiology, and B.A. in English, Journalism, and Social Work. In 2007 also five master's degree programs were established, in Physics, Microbiology, Business, Social Work, and English.[2] In 2009 Higher Secondary School Level (+2) was initiated and in 2011 Cambridge A-levels.[3]

The College moved to Maitighar Heights in 1988 and the first new building, the Academic Block, was built in 1993. The construction of the Administration Block was completed in 1998, followed by that of Watrin Hall and the Library Block in 2000. To cater to the needs of the two IT-based degree programs, and to provide all students with computer facilities, four computer laboratories were constructed, with a total of 203 internet-connected computers. The E.L. Watrin Memorial Building was built in 2005, linking the Academic Block with the Administration Block. A rooftop cafeteria was built in 2006. In 2009 a six-storey building housing modern laboratories for physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, and microbiology was completed.

Admission

Today, the College has approximately 3000 students coming from 275 schools representing all 75 districts and almost all the ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of Nepal. One of the innovative outreach programs is the Partnership in Education (PIE) established in 2004. PIE works in partnership with government schools for the development of the academically weak students in the lowest income brackets, accommodating approximately 300 students annually.[4]

A typical admission profile of St. Xavier's can be correlated to their admission criteria for intermediate programmes (grades 11 and 12) which is extremely competitive. Every year more than 13,000 students from throughout Nepal apply and around 500 students are enrolled. In 2012 of the 685 selected 520 enrolled, with a median GPA of 3.9/4.0.[5] The admission process includes a preliminary cutoff score at the School Leaving Certificate national exam – equivalent of GCSE, an analytic Multiple Choice examination, and an interview with college personnel.[6]

A message from the Principal...

On behalf of the entire St. Xavier’s College family, it is my pleasure to introduce you to St. Xavier’s College and its vision for the students studying here.

St. Xavier’s College was founded in 1988 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Today it has been deemed as one of the nation’s finest higher education institute with an annual enrollment of over 3000 Plus Two, A- Level, undergraduate and graduate students from all 75 districts of Nepal.

St. Xavier’s college was first founded as a response to a call in 1988 to form men and women who are intellectually competent and socially responsible. This call is ever more relevant today as the country is going through a transitional phase, politically, economically and socially.

In a world where education has become more of a business, St. Xavier’s College offers a unique atmosphere that allows the quality of education and formation of character to flourish. Students at St. Xavier’s College are not only taught subjects but the institution focuses on forming responsible, competent, innovative and grounded young men and women that work for society. As an institution of higher education, St. Xavier’s college is not only committed to the dissemination of knowledge but also the creation of new knowledge and discourses. To facilitate this, the college offers well equipped laboratory and library facilities. Research oriented teaching learning approaches in the faculties have made St. Xavier’s college a highly sought after institution in the country.

The college has also introduced mandatory rural camps for all faculties. These camps help allow students get a glimpse of the complexities of issues that the country faces. This is an effort to help create more socially responsible young citizens for the country.

Another important activity that has helped in the holistic development of the students is the weekly assembly that is conducted for the Plus Two and A-Level students and the monthly conferences for undergraduate and graduate students with the Principal. In these meetings the vision and mission of the college is clearly discussed and analyzed. I believe that every one of us in this family experience immense joy and pride to be part of an institution that works towards achieving excellence.

Besides academics the college also stresses the importance of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Various student clubs operate in the campus finding new ventures every year. Separate clubs for undergraduate and graduate students have been established to help them grow in co-curricular activities of their level. These clubs have often witnessed creative and ingenious ideas.

Even though the institution has its roots firmly planted in the soil of Nepal, we realize the importance of having a trans- national approach in delivering education to help produce competent and skilled students. As a result, the college is involved in two immersion programs: one for the students with DIAK University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the other for the teachers with Sogang University in Korea.

The institution has also realized the importance of maintaining a rich alumni network. As an effort, the college has decided to host an Alumni Day every year on the 25th of December. Christmas carries the message” Hope.” It is fitting to reunite with our graduates on a special day like Christmas every year as they are the Hope of our nation today.

Finally, Joining with hundreds of Jesuit educational institutions all over the world, the college is striving to create a new generation of leaders – men and women who will be capable of shaping the future with the vision, justice, compassion and charity- with concern for all the human family.

We invite you to join us in this mission as a prospective student, parent or friend.

From the Principal's Desk

"Everything is destroyed and it will take me a long time to rebuild it all." This was the last sentence of a farmer from Ghaleghati village in Dhading district after narrating rule devastation caused by the Great Quake that shattered the village. As I was listening to him I was moved by the "Hope and Trust" he had in his hard work to rebuild his life. Many of those who are homeless due to the tragedy have taken a positive approach to the whole situation and have begun to bring their life to normalcy. At this juncture, I encourage all Xavierians to be part of such hope of ordinary people through comforting words and memorable deeds. Light the flame of happiness wherever you are and further give concrete meaning to their hope with your presence.

Keeping in mind our responsibility towards the victims of the recent tragedy that occurred in our country, we uphold "Solidarity" as the theme for this academic year. As a sign of our solidarity towards the suffering victims in the Great Quake, St. Xavier's College will withhold all celebrations completely this year, including St. Xavier's Day. This is our gesture of solidarity towards thousands moaning the loss of their loved ones. On each important occasion, as a college family we will organize social outreach programs.

In the coming days, I urge ask the Xavierians to be a medium to realize the "Hope and Trust" of those citizens of unreached and remote villages of our country.
