St Columba's High School is a co-educational six-year Roman Catholic, comprehensive secondary school, located next to Glenburn School on Inverkip Road, in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. The school serves south west Greenock, Gourock, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay. The current enrolment (2012/2013) is 582 pupils.
The school won the Platinum Award in Enterprise Inverclyde Standards and Quality Report 2005/2006.[1] The school also received top marks from the last visit by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education.[2] It is also the first school in Inverclyde to receive Charter Mark status, for providing outstanding customer service.[3] At the end of September 2009, the school moved to the old Greenock High School building.
History
St. Columba's was officially opened by Archbishop Donald Mackintosh of Glasgow, on 16 June 1933, having only taken 1 year and 3 days from initial foundation work to opening, at a cost of £50,000 including roads and fittings. However, the original school dates back to 1909. It was originally located in Peat Road, Greenock before moving to Gourock in 1971. In 2009 it moved back to Greenock to its current site at Inverkip Road.[4]
Campus
The main teaching block is a three-storey building consisting of classrooms for English, Mathematics, Social Subjects (Modern Studies, History, Geography) and Religious education as well as specialised areas on the top floor for Art & Design and Home Economics. The campus also includes gymnasia, swimming pool, community center and school theatre. On the school campus are two gravel football pitches and a gravel hockey pitch.
Starting in July 2009, the school moved location to the old Greenock High School building, while demolition work started in preparation for the building of a new school on the Bayhill site for the amalgamation of Gourock High and Greenock Academy. St Columba's is scheduled to move to this new campus in 2013.[5]
