St Mary's is located in the centre of the village of Magor, Monmouthshire. [1] It is has been designated as a Grade I listed building since 3 January 1963.[1]

The church is the lead church of the Magor Rectorial Benefice, led by Revd Jeremy Harris, which serves a population of about 12,000.[2]

History and architecture

Architecturally St Mary's was "one of the most ambitious churches in the county, though the ambitions were not all realized."[3] It is in the Decorated style with a prominent, integral, tower.[4] The church was originally dedicated to St Leonard, until the mid-nineteenth century restoration.[5] The porch, of the fourteenth/fifteenth centuries, has buttresses which display "ferocious gargoyles and pinnacles."[3]

The interior contains interesting stained glass of the nineteenth century, including The Good Shepherd by Kempe & Co of 1930–31.[3]

The church is the burial place of Welsh composer Mansel Thomas (1909–1986).[6]
