Startup Grind is a Silicon Valley-based organization that educates and mentors entrepreneurs through monthly business events and speaking series in cities across the globe.[1][2][3] Their events have featured speakers including Clayton Christensen (The Innovator's Dilemma), Ben Silbermann (Pinterest), Vinod Khosla (Sun Microsystems),[4] Jessica Livingston (Y Combinator), and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn).[5][6] The program is powered by Google for Entrepreneurs.[7][8] Startup Grind has a presence in 170 cities and sixty countries.[7]

History

Derek Andersen and Spencer Nielsen founded Startup Grind in 2010.[9] Startup Grind's first event was held in Mountain View, California in Andersen's office.[5][10] In Fall 2011, after an entrepreneur expressed his penchant for the program to Andersen, Startup Grind spread to Los Angeles and New York City.

The first annual Startup Grind Global Conference was held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California on February 4–6, 2013. By August 2013, the organization had fifty chapters in twenty nations.[5] Startup Grind claimed its one hundredth chapter in April 2014 and as of that date, the company existed in forty-two countries.[11]

The second annual Startup Grind Global Conference was held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California February 3–5, 2014.[12]

Fireside Chat Interview Format

Startup Grind events, hosted monthly in each city, follow a 'fireside chat' format where the speaker and the host are sat in armchairs facing the audience while the host asks questions of the speaker to draw out the speaker's personal circumstances, experiences and lessons learned on the way to their success for the benefit of those watching.[13]

Directors Day

Startup Grind Directors Day is held the day before the Startup Grind Global Conference each year. Many of the Directors who operate local chapters gather to network and exchange ideas about on best practices, celebrate each other's successes and discuss the future of the organization.
