State Highway 42, commonly referred to as Ghodbunder Road or G.B. Road, runs entirely through the district of Thane. It is one of the major roads leading out of Thane city and connects to the Eastern Express Highway, becoming National Highway 3. It also connects to the Western Express Highway to become National Highway 8 at Ghodbunder leading to Gujarat.
General information
It is approximately 20 km long and links the two main arterial roads of Mumbai, the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway. It is tolled by the MSRDC.[1] This road skirts the northern boundary of Salsette Island providing scenic views of the Yeoor hills and the Thane creek.
G.B. Road cuts across dense forests which form part of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It also skirts the Vasai Creek for most of its route and overlooks the forest from across the creek. In spite of development encroaching on the forest, much of flora and fauna continue to survive and prosper. Ghodbunder is lined with numerous historical monuments like the Ghodbunder Fort.
G.B. Road has become one of the prime real estate destinations of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) due to its infrastructure links. Far-off areas of G.B. Road like Kasarvadavli, Ovala and Bhayanderpada are closely connected to Mira Road Railway Station and Borivali Railway Station, and the road is connected by city buses like BEST (Mumbai City Bus), TMT (Thane Municipal Transport), NMMT (Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport), MBMT (Mira Bhayander Municipal Transport) and VVMT (Vasai Virar City Bus).
Buses connecting Thane, Mulund, Mumbra and Vashi to Borivali Station, Gorai, Vasai, Mira Road, Bhayander, etc. pass through G.B. Road. In a nutshell, G.B. Road has become a satellite town of Thane and Mumbai.
History

This was once the only road passing by the side of the dense Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and afforded great picturesque view's. Even today, its pass through China Creek is a sought-after location for film shootings. The original name of creek is Chena Creek, but during the course of time it has become China Creek.
