Career

Steve Dawson has produced albums by Jim Byrnes, Kelly Joe Phelps, Old Man Luedecke, The Sojourners, and The Deep Dark Woods. He has won two Juno Awards. His "frequent collaborators [include] Chris Gestrin (keys), Keith Lowe (bass), and Geoff Hicks (drums)".[1] His 2004 Juno Award was for Contemporary Jazz Album with the Great Uncles of the Revolution. His 2003 Juno Award was for Roots/Traditional Group Album with Zubot and Dawson. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 he won the producer of the year award from the Western Canadian Music Awards.[1]

His guitar playing has been called "organic [and] flowing", and it includes "...amazing slide and fingerstyle guitar work,... Hawaiian guitar, and psychedelic pedal steel" playing. His album Nightshade was "listed in the β€œTop 10 Guitar Albums of the Year - 2011” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine."[2]

The Penguin Eggs Review of Nightshade in March 2011 stated that β€œ... his guitar work [is] as offhandedly brilliant as any he's done, flashy at moments, painterly at others.” [2] The Blues Festival E- Guide from March 2011 states that "Dawson is comfortable in almost any musical setting you could name, and his newest album, "Nightshade" draws from his many interests to form his most satisfyingly complete album to date." [2]

In 2005, 2006, and 2010 he won the Canadian Folk Music Award. He also won the Independent Canadian Music Award for Roots Album Of The Year twice, in 2000 and 2002. In 2002, he won the Grand Prix de Jazz de Montreal at the Montreal Jazz Festival with The Great Uncles of the Revolution.[1]
