Steve "Stylianos" Giatzoglou (alternate spellings: Yantzoglou, Yatzoglou) AKA Steve Young (Greek: Στηβ Γιατζόγλου; born December 11, 1949) is a retired Greek American former professional basketball player. He played basketball professionally in the Greek Basket League. He is also a pro basketball coach, and the President of the Union of Greek Basketball Athletes.
Playing career
College
Giatzoglou played college basketball at Connecticut College, under the name of Steve Young.
Professional
Giatzoglou's pro career was noted for his success with the Greek Basket League club Olympiacos. With Olympiacos, he had a great career, and he is considered today to be one of the best players in the club's history. He won 2 Greek League championships and 4 Greek Cups with Olympiacos, while playing alongside fellow Olympiacos star Giorgos Kastrinakis.
Greek national team
Giatzoglou played with the senior men's Greek national basketball team in 115 games, scoring a total of 1,468 points,[1] for a scoring average of 12.8 points per game. He made his debut with the Greek national team on May 6, 1973. He played at 3 EuroBaskets with Greece's senior team, the EuroBasket 1973, the EuroBasket 1975, and the EuroBasket 1979. He played his last game with the Greek national team on February 18, 1981, in a friendly game against the Bulgarian national basketball team.
Coaching career
As a professional basketball coach, Giatzoglou has coached several clubs, including: Olympiacos, Aris, Pagrati, Egaleo, Iraklis, AEK, Dafni, and Peristeri. In 2014, Giatzoglou was hired as an assistant coach to work in South Korea, with the Goyang Orions of the Korean Basketball League.[2] In 2015, Giatzoglou became the head coach of the Greek club Kavala.[3]
