Steve Mason (Canadian-Dutch ice hockey player)

Steve Mason (born January 13, 1988 in Tilburg) is a Canadian-Dutch professional ice hockey player. He is currently playing for Swiss second-division side SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.

Playing career

As a youngster Steve played in Swiss and German youth leagues, while his father was coaching in both countries. In 2007, Steve moved to North America and spent the 2007-08 season in the SJHL playing for the Nipawin Hawks. In 2008-09, he joined BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers.[1]

Between 2009 and 2013, Mason attended Miami University (Ohio),[2] playing a total of 48 games for the Redhawks, tallying two goals and five assists.[3]

Back in Europe, Mason joined with Swiss NLB outfit EHC Olten for the 2013-14 season,[4] before joining his hometown team Tilburg Trappers prior to the 2014-15 campaign. In November 2015, he was picked up by the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, a member of the Swiss second-tier and signed a contract for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.[5]

International career

After representing the Netherlands at Junior World Championships, Mason was selected to play for the Dutch Men’s National Team at the 2008 (Division IA),[6] 2014 (Division I, Group B)[7] and 2015 (Division I, Group B)[8] World Championships.

Personal life

He is the son of a Dutch mother and Canadian coach Doug Mason.[9] Steve was born in Tilburg, The Netherlands, where his father was playing professionally at the time.
