Strathfield Plaza is a shopping centre in Strathfield in the Inner West[1] of Sydney, Australia. The centre is located on Churchill Avenue opposite the Strathfield Railway Station and is the largest shopping complex in the Strathfield Town Centre. It is approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) west of the Sydney central business district and is in the administrative centre of the Strathfield local government area.
History
Strathfield Plaza opened in 1981 and consists of a nine level commercial office tower, a single storey retail shopping centre along with a two level car park. The Shopping centre consists of major retailers such as Woolworths, St.George Bank, Australia Post, Flight Centre and Oliver Brown. The Plaza was the location of a mass shooting on 17 August 1991 known as the Strathfield massacre. The incident left eight dead and six wounded.
Access and transport
Strathfield railway station is located next to Strathfield Plaza and is a major interchange station on the Sydney Trains network and is also a stop for trains on the NSW TrainLink network. The station acts as a hub for buses serving the northern part of the inner west of Sydney. Strathfield is located on the Main Suburban railway line and has Easy Access for wheelchairs.
Events
Strathfield Plaza is a major sponsor for local events such as The Annual Inner-West Local Business Awards and also participates in Strathfield Council's Spring Food Festival, Movies in the Park and many more events throughout the year.
The Plaza also hosts school holiday event activities which are usually advertised in the Strathfield Scene newspaper, the Inner-West Courier newspaper, on their Facebook page,[2] and website.[3]
