Subalpine forest is a vegetation type generally found in the Subalpine zone, typically above an upper montane forest in the upper montane zone, and below the alpine zone.[1][2]

Subalpine forest in the Sierra Nevada range is characterized by an overstory of white bark pine, lodgepole pine, mountain hemlock, and an understory of shrubs including white heather and red heather.[2]
