Sukrita Paul Kumar
Sukrita paul Kumar (born DOB) is an Indian noted poet, critic and academician of many years of standing.[1] Sukrita Paul Kumar recipient of many prestigious grants, nationals and internationals fellowships and residencies. Sukrita Paul Kumar's major research project with the UGC led to the publication of her widely read book Narrating Partition. She is the Chief editor of the book on Cultural Diversity, Linguistic Plurality and Literary traditions of India,[2] textbook prescribed by University of Delhi as Concurrent course for Honours.
Early life and background
Sukrita Paul Kumar was born in Nairobi,Kenya[3] to Joginder paul, an educationist, a well known fiction writer in Urdu and a teacher of English literature from place and mother name, a retired Professor in English from Jamia Millia Islamia. Sukrita paul Kumar did most of her schooling in Kenya. Sukrita Paul Kumar migrated to India with her family when Kenya got freedom from the British. Sukrita Paul Kumar is married to husband name, a consultant electronic engineer and has two grown up children. Sukrita Paul Kumar lived in Aurangabad, Maharashtra for a few years before settling down in New Delhi. Sukrita Paul Kumar is also an active cultural and social activist.
Career
Educator
Sukrita Paul Kumar has over four decades of teaching experience as Associate professor at Graduate and Post-Graduate courses on English and American literature, as also Indian literature in Translation. She educated at Zakir Husain College, Hindu College (both University of Delhi, India) and Government College of Arts and Sciences, Marathwada University, India. She supervises doctoral research on the "Creative Process", Partition literature and Gender in literature in India and abroad. Sukrita Paul Kumar currently holds the Aruna Asaf Ali Chair, university of Delhi and Programme Coordinator of B.Tech Humanities (under the meta college concept) at Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi.
Literary
Sukrita's book, The New Story and Conversations on Modernism, published by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla led to a deeper understanding of " Modernism" in post-Partition Hindi and Urdu literature. As Director Of a UNESCO project on " The Culture of Peace " she edited Mapping Memories, a volume of Urdu short stories from India and Pakistan. Many of Sukrita's poems[4] have emerged from her experience of working with homeless people, Tsunami victims and street children. She has lectured and given readings of her poems in many institutions and universities, seminars and conferences in India and abroad. Sukrita Paul kumar has been on the jury for many literary awards. - Sukrita paul Kumar was awarded the Tagore Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture for a book project on Cultural Diversity in India, in May 2012
- In 2009 and 2010, she was awarded two the Grants by International Council of Canadian Studies for projects on " Managing Diversity "
- In 2010, she was awarded the Grant by Sahitya Akademi for a project on Narrating Women's lives in Chamba and Bharmour.
- In 2009, she was awarded the Visitorship at Concordia University for the designing of a course on Indian Women and their Lives.
- In 2005-2007, she was awarded the Grant for an Academic Link Programme with SOAS, London by British Council.
- In 2004, she was awarded an Honorary Fellow, International Writer's Workshop, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong
- In 2004, she was awarded the Translation Grant from International Center for Writing and Translation, University of California at Irvine, USA.
- In 2002, she was awarded an Honorary Fellow, International Writing Programme, Iowa, USA
- In 1998-2001, she was awarded the Financial award by the University Grants Commission, India for Major Research Project on " Partition and its Relation to Cultural Re orientations in Modern India.
- In July 1994, she was awarded the British Council Visitorship for London.
- In July 1994, she was awarded the Fellow, Cambridge Seminars on Contemporary English Writers, Cambridge.
- In 1993, she was awarded the Faculty Research Fellowship, Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute award for Canadian Studies. Affiliation : York University, Toronto, Canada.
- In 1991, she was awarded the Bharat Nirman Award for Talented Women.
- In 1990, she was awarded the Rockefeller Grant for participation at the International Women's Conference on " Women's Worlds- Their Reality and Choices " at Hunter's College, New York.
- In 1987-1990, she was awarded the Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.
- In 1972-1973, she was awarded the two Grants in aid by the American Studies Research Centre, Hyderabad for Ph.D Programme on American Literature.

Social Activism
- In November 2002, set up a winter shelter for the homeless in an old school building lying vacant and managed it for six months with 300 homeless men and children. Literacy camps, Counselling sessions and awareness workshops on sanitation, hygiene, gender etc. organized for the homeless along with a daily meeting to discuss their problems.
- Workshops to mobilize college students to participate in the above-mentioned venture to evolve an understanding of the problems of the homeless in Delhi. This was organized to also dispel the common perception that the homeless are criminals and delinquent.
- An extensive programme for fund raising was organized to provide the homeless specially the old with blankets and shoes.
- Have been conducting workshops through Women's Studies programme, University of Delhi in slum areas and schools on Gender sensitization.
