Sunbeams School

Sunbeams School is a private school in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was one of the second schools to establish Bangla as the medium of instruction in Bangladesh.

History

It was founded by Shakirin Ehsan in 1978 and was purchased by the business magnate Nilufer Mandeep in 1989. Until 1994 Sunbeams School provided education through Grade 5, but Sunbeams is now running 'A' (Advanced) Level exams as well. The school's mascot is the Rising Sun.

Campuses and programs

Sunbeams school has two campuses: one in the residential area of Dhanmondi that conducts classes from Playgroup to Class 4. The other campus is in Uttara and has classes from Playgroup to 'A' Levels.

Sunbeams has two branches:

The Uttara campus is the main campus, containing the Senior Section and administrative buildings. It is the larger of the two campuses, built in 2008, and consists of one building, one football field, and indoor and outdoor basketball courts. The Uttara campus has a canteen, an auditorium, a science laboratory and many other things which the junior (Dhanmondi) campus does not.

Sports

Sunbeams has two joint soccer fields which are ideal for tournament matches. There is one cricket pitch, one indoor multipurpose court, and outdoor and indoor basketball courts. There are two tables for playing table tennis.

Science

The senior section has two laboratories: one for chemistry and the other for Biology and physics.

Extra curriculum

Along with studies, the students can do many other things. There is a range of curriculum such as arts and crafts, sports, chess, scrabble, vocal music, guitar, quiz, cooking, karate, drama, literature etc.

Sex scandal

In 2010, a story on a sexual relationship between a student and a security guard on school premises was reported by the renowned Bangladeshi newspaper, Prothom Alo. The identity of the student involved was not reported as he was a minor. The claims were vigorously denied by the school authority.
