Supermercados Disco (Argentina)

Supermercados Disco is an Argentine supermarket chain. It is one of many supermarket chains in South America to be owned by Cencosud.[1] The Uruguayan company Supermercados Disco del Uruguay is an unrelated supermarket chain, but the Argentine chain was, in their beginning, part of the Uruguayan conglomerate and used the Uruguayan chain's logo.[2]

History

Supermercados Disco opened in 1961 in Argentina for the first time;[1] one year after its Uruguayan namesake. In 1967, an Uruguayan family bought 50% of the Argentine brand's stock, increasing their interest to 100% in 1981. The Uruguayans retained ownership of Disco until 1984.[3]

During the 1960s, Disco's first decade as a supermarket chain, it competed directly with other well known Argentine supermarkets such as Supercoop, MiniMax (which was owned by the Rockefeller family), Supermercados Tanti, Supermercado Norte, Supermercados Gigante, Supermercados Llaneza, Supermercados Gran Tía, Supermercados Todo, Supermercados Canguro, and Supermercados Satélite,[4] all of which were large, national supermarket chains, and with smaller, mom-and-pop supermarket operation across the country.

By 1991, Supermercados Disco changed its logo to reflect that it was no longer part of the Uruguayan brand.[2]

As of 2015, Supermercados Disco is the third-largest supermarket chain in Argentina, with 143 stores, behind Supermercados Día's 400, and Carrefour's 200, but well ahead of Walmart Argentina.[4] As Dia is Spanish owned and Carrefour is a French company, this makes Disco the largest Argentine supermarket chain.
