Suwannee High School is the larger of two high schools in Suwannee County, Florida. It is located in Live Oak, Florida and serves 1,282 students in grades 9 through 12.
Programs
It has a successful foreign exchange program and a diverse population. Suwannee High School is partnered with the Suwannee-Hamilton Technical Center to provide 14 different vocational tracks that allow students to earn credit toward a standard high school diploma while learning a trade. Dual-enrollment classes are offered through the North Florida Community College as well as an Advanced Placement curriculum.
Groups
The school has over 20 clubs including: Academic Team, Art Club, National Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, National FFA Organization, Rotary Interact, Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Key Club, Leo Club, National Honor Society, Students Working Against Tobacco, Thurgood Marshall Achievers, and Tri-Hi-Y.
The school's Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps is currently the 17th best JROTC unit in the state of Florida. The local FFA has won numerous state and national awards. The Academic Team has won 15 times in the state championship. The Bulldog marching band is under the direction of Stacey Gindlesperger and has gone to state marching competition the past 3 years. The concert band earned an overall superior rating at concert district competition and received individual superior ratings in all captions including sight reading. This is the first time this has happened in 21 years.
Sports
There are 27 different athletic teams, who are known as the Bulldogs. The athletic teams are available in the following sports: football, girls cross country, band, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, golf, bowling, and girls' weightlifting. All athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to participate.
The varsity football team was once a powerhouse, winning four consecutive 3A FHSAA Championships from 1987 to 1991. This feat is unmatched in the state of Florida, the only other four year consecutive football state championship team did not play in the same class all four years.
The Suwannee High wrestling team, coached by David Laxton, is considered one of the top teams in the state. With 3 state championships 5 runners-up and numerous top 5 placings. Since 1981, the school has put out 19 state champions, including Billy Saylor, a 3-time state champion. Along with those champions, there were 11 all Americans.
Notable graduates
- Sheck Exley, pioneering cave diver, was a mathematics teacher at the school for many years up until his death in 1994.
- Jimmy Nelson, American football player (Miami Seahawks)
- Dwight Stansel, who graduated in 1964, served four terms in the Florida House of Representatives from 1998–2006.
- Andra Davis (American Football) played middle linebacker in the NFL from 2002-2011.
- Kelly Jennings(American Football) played cornerback in the NFL from 2006-2011.
- Bruce Johnson (American football) played cornerback in the NFL from 2009-2012.
