On October 21, 2015, ABC Family announced that it has picked up a fifth season of its hit original drama series Switched at Birth.[2] The fifth season will premiere in 2017.[3] On March 11, 2016 it was confirmed that the ten-episode fifth season will be the last. [4]

The one-hour scripted drama revolves around two young women who discover they were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments.[5] While balancing school, jobs, and their unconventional family, the girls, along with their friends and family, experience deaf culture, relationships, class differences, racism, audism, and other social issues.
