Taipei County was a former county of the Republic of China in northern Taiwan before it was upgraded into special municipality in 2010. The county capital was Banqiao.

History

Taipei County was established in Taiwan Province on 7 January 1946 after the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in October 1945. On 1 October 2007 Taipei County was given the status of Quasi-municipality. It was upgraded into a special municipality on 25 December 2010 with the name New Taipei City.[1]

Administration

At the time before the upgrade, Taipei County administered 10 cities, 4 urban townships and 15 rural townships. All of these became districts of the city of New Taipei. In 1968, two townships were transferred to Yangmingshan Administrative Bureau later merged with Taipei City and four townships were transferred to Taipei City.
