Takoradi Polytechnic is a public tertiary institution located in Sekondi-Takoradi, ^[1]the capital of the Western Region of Ghana. Takoradi Polytechnic was established as a Government Technical Institute in 1954 and was upgraded to become part of the Tertiary Education System by the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDCL 321), which has since 2007 been replaced by the Polytechnics Law (Act 745).^[1]

Logo

The Polytechnic logo captures the essence of technical and vocational education in its^[2] design and emblems. The circular nature of the logo symbolizes the completeness of the training and education nurtured at the Polytechnic. These are summed up in the motto: “Nsa na adwen ma mpuntu” (literally, “skills (the hands) and knowledge (mind) engender development”).

An open book set against a toothed wheel or gear on a yellow background symbolizes the technical and vocational nature of the education and training given at the Polytechnic, a matter of theory and practice at its best. The Adinkra symbol of “Ntesie” or “Mate masie” (literally, “I have heard and I have kept it”) is the Ghanaian cultural symbol for learning which is set on a blue background with yellow wavy stripes representing the location of the institution near the sea with its waves.

History

Takoradi Polytechnic was established as Government Technical Institute^[2] in 1954. In 1965, it was upgraded to a second cycle institution. For almost forty (40) years, the institution operated under the administration of the Ghana Education Service. During that period, it offered programmes mainly at the Craft and Technician Certificate levels in commercial and technical subjects.

In 2012, the Management of Takoradi Polytechnic announced they have secured a $6 million dollar facility from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to develop a modern campus for oil and gas studies on a 155-acre land acquired at Akatakyie-Ahanta, near Takoradi. The new campus will be dedicated to engineering programmes to serve the needs of the growing oil and gas and allied industries

Corporate partnerships

The TTE Technical Training Group, which is the UK's leading provider of technical training to the oil & gas, process, manufacturing and engineering sectors, announced a major new partnership in Ghana with Tullow Oil, representing the Jubilee Partners and the Takoradi Polytechnic College, to establish a new training centre and provide technical training advice and guidance aimed at equipping local technicians with knowledge and skills for the oil, gas manufacturing and mining industries. The Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Poku-Agyemang on Friday 21 June 2013 commissioned a $6 million Technical Training Centre for the Takoradi Polytechnic to train Ghanaian students in Oil/Gas and other technical vocations. The centre, named "Jubilee Technical Training Centre," was co-sponsored by the Oil Jubilee Partners namely Tullow Ghana Limited, Anadarko WCTP Company, Kosmos Energy, Ghana National Petroleum Company and Sabre Oil/Gas Holding Limited.The centre is the first in West Africa to offer diploma accredited qualifications to support industry and commerce in Ghana

As part of its efforts to provide practical skills training for undergraduates, as well as the continuous development of human resource, Accra Brewery Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Takoradi Polytechnic. The MOU, which covers a four-year period, will present an opportunity to students of the Polytechnic to acquire in-depth technical knowledge, training and skills from the brewery

Awards and achievement

Takoradi Polytechnic was nominated as the Best Regional Polytechnic in Science and Education by the Europe Business Assembly (EBA). In a statement signed by the EBA International Relations Manager, Anna Gorobets, the award is in recognition of the Polytechnic’s professionalism in teaching and learning, the quality of researches, introduction and realization of international programmes as well as contributions to national educational development in 2012.The statement also added that the Rector of the Polytechnic, Rev. Prof. Daniel A. Nyarko, will be presented with an award for being the ‘Best Manager of the Year’ in the science and education sphere and with a personal certificate. The Oxford Summit of Leaders in Science and Education is an annual forum of investors, academics, university presidents and rectors from Europe and around the world.

Takoradi Polytechnic received an award for being the best in examination ethics in Ghana for the year 2012 by the Exam Ethics Marshals International (EEMI)which was established to promote integrity, truthfulness, honesty and ethical values in the conduct of examinations so that quality human resources are produced for the society.The Rector of the Polytechnic, Reverend Professor Daniel Agyapong Nyarko, was also conferred the honorary Exam Ethics Master Marshal for his contribution towards ensuring transparency and integrity in the conduct of examinations

Takoradi Polytechnic was ranked the first among polytechnics in Ghana for the second time running by the world universities ranking body, Webomatics, the largest public research body known for its scientific methods in web ranking. The Polytechnic maintained its 2012 first position among polytechnics in Ghana and placed third in Sub-Saharan Africa, coming after Auchi Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology, both in Nigeria.
