The Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant is a 520 MW run-of-river hydroelectric project being constructed on Dhauliganga River in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, India. The plant is expected to generate over 2.5k GWh of electricity annually.[1]

Construction began in November 2006 and is expected to be complete in June 2016. Due to harsh weather conditions, floods and remote location project execution is sluggish.[2] Residents of local town Joshimath(Jyotirmath) which is just 1.5 km from the project site have raised the concerns about the environmental affect of the upcoming project.[3]

The power plant is located downstream on the Alaknanda River and will contain four 130 MW Pelton turbine-generators. The dam is being constructed across the Dhauliganga River and has a catchment area of 3,100 sqkm.

BHEL[4] was awarded the contract to supply four 130MW Pelton type turbines for the Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric power project. The contractual scope also included the testing, commissioning and operation of the generators, switchgear and excitation system.
