Tashkent International School (TIS) is a school located in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan in Central Asia. There were 393 students enrolled during the school year 2009-2010. And there are over 450 students in grades 6~12 alone, as of 2015-16 school year. In Tashkent International School there is a preschool, kindergarten and 12 grades.
History
Tashkent International School (TIS), an International Baccalaureate (IB) World school, is a not-for-profit, independent, co-educational day school governed by a board of directors elected from the parent community. Established in 1994, TIS serves the needs of an expanding international population, including children of expatriate business people and children from the diplomatic communities.[1]
Tashkent International School was founded in 1994 with the help of the United Nations. There are a wide variety of teachers, hailing from countries such as US, Canada, the UK, Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, France, New Zealand, Turkey, Australia, Armenia, South Africa, India and Uzbekistan. A number of prestigious American and international universities have accepted the graduates of TIS,[2] including but not limited to Harvard, George Mason University, Northeastern University, The University of Texas at Austin, Universiteit Leiden, Drexel University, and Mount Holyoke College.
The campus and the school, as described on their website, "... is housed in a recently remodeled facility on a 13-acre wooded campus with beautifully landscaped grounds. It is located only 10 minutes from the city center in a quiet, residential community. The school is a fully enclosed campus with full-time security. The campus offers large, landscaped and wooded recreation areas with park benches, basketball courts, a soccer field, a pond and gardens. There is also a separate playground for kindergarten and preschool students. Indoors, the facility is handicapped accessible and features large, climate-controlled classrooms, two spacious libraries, an auditorium, a sports hall, four computer labs, and three science labs, all with wireless Internet access."[3]

Academics
There are 12 grade levels in Tashkent International School, plus Kindergarten and pre-Kindergarten. There are three academic programs at TIS: Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Year Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP). PYP is for kindergarten to grade 5; MYP is for grade 6 to grade 10; and DP is for grades 11 and 12.
TIS is the only International Baccalaureate school in Uzbekistan.
Student councils and PTA
There are many student councils: Student Council (STUCO), Finance Council, Catering Council, Art Council, Sports Council, and Digital Council. STUCO has a Facebook page. There is a PTA (Parent Teacher Association). Any parents of TIS students can be members of PTA. TIS is also a member of CEESA (Central and Eastern European Schools Association), a student activities and sports conference. CEESA hosts a conference every year for teachers as well that is attended by over 250 teachers on average to promote professional development.
Extracurricular activities
Tashkent International School offers chances for students to write for student newspapers in elementary and high school.[4]
The school offers a wide variety of after-school activities. In the first trimester TIS offers participation in a football team. The teams are Junior Varsity boys, Junior Varsity girls, Varsity boys and Varsity girls. All teams participate in the TIS Football League, as well as the varsity teams participating in the CASC Tournament which was held in Tashkent for the first time in 2014. There is also a middle school and 4th/5th grade basketball team, one for boys and one for girls during the first trimester. In the first trimester TIS also creates a high school theatre production and its usual variety of other after-school activities. At the same time as high school drama is elementary drama.
In the second trimester TIS also offers participation in basketball teams: Varsity girls, Junior Varsity girls, Varsity boys and Junior varsity boys. During this trimester a drama production for middle school and 5th grade is offered.
During the last trimester TIS will have track and field after school activities. It will also have a 4th and 5th grade football team and a middle school football team. One team is for girls and one is for boys. There will be a coed basketball team for middle school. TIS's 6th through 12th grade musical take place in the last trimester. As well as all this will be the usual range of other after school activities such as ceramics, hip-hop dancing, etc.
Facilities
Tashkent International School consists of several buildings on a large wooded campus. In 2015, TIS added a purpose-built elementary building. In addition TIS has an Arts and Design building, and a separate gymnasium.
