Tecumseh Elementary is a public elementary school in Vancouver, British Columbia part of School District 39 Vancouver.
History
The school was named after Tecumseh, a leader of the Shawnee tribe. Tecumseh was built in 1910. The main building consists of three floors. A gymnasium is in a separate building. There are two portables which host three classes. There are 18 divisions from Grades K-7.
Tecumseh Elementary School was built in 1910. Upgrades and expansion over many decades have improved the once small wooden building into an impressive brick building, a great learning environment.
Programs
The school has a MACC (Multi Age Cluster Class) program. Currently, Ms. Cantelon is teaching the Grade 5/6/7 program There are also 4 resources teachers, a speech language pathologist and a First Nations Worker?. All Grade 6/7s are invited to join Student Leadership, a program where students can join a committee (i.e. Announcements/Music Listening, Nutrition, Action Schools, Environmental, Rainy Day Board Games, Photography, Theme Day/Spirit Week, Hallway Monitors, Library).
Lunch
- Tecumseh primary students have the privilege to eat in the room off the gym.
- Grade 4 to grade 7 students eat in the gym. Everybody must sit on the ground except for the grade 7 students, who are allowed to sit on the benches. They need tables!
- The school only allows grade 6s and 7s to go out of the school for lunch, only with a signed note that has the teacher and parent's signature saying that they are allowed to go out of the school for lunch until the bell rings at 12:55 pm.
- Every Wednesdays there is hot lunch and the students can order pizza; their parents can also volunteer to help there.
Extra Curricular Activities
- Tecumseh has many extra curricular activities such as, running club, dance club, library monitors, basketball, volleyball, indoor hockey, American football, badminton, and more. There is also a Recorder Ensemble, a choir and other extracurricular music opportunities.
- Annually, Grade 6's go to Camp Elphinstone for 3 days and two nights. Upon interviewing several students at Tecumseh, they said camp was "awesome" or "radical". The vice-principal, Mr. McNicholl worked there when he was a teenager.
- In previous years, Grade 5's used to visit Victoria for a day. However, budget cuts by the Vancouver School Board has ended this opportunity.
Graduation
Tecumseh Elementary School holds an assembly and buffet lunch for each year's class of graduating students. The majority of graduating students continue their education at either David Thompson Secondary or Gladstone Secondary the following school year.
