The Tedeschi Trucks Band — formerly known as the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band — is a blues rock group based in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Formed in 2010, the band is led by husband-and-wife musicians Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, and primarily features members from their solo groups. Their debut album, Revelator (2011), won the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Blues Album. As of 2016, the band has released three studio albums and one live album.

History

The Tedeschi Trucks Band was founded in 2010 after both Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo bands on hiatus to form a new group that lets the married couple focus on making music together, and allows them to spend more time together while touring and recording.[1] Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi had toured together in 2007, under the name Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival; this group's material was largely culled from Derek and Susan's solo projects, while the Tedeschi Trucks Band mostly focuses on performing original songs.

After the announcement in late 2009 of a hiatus for both The Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi Band,[2] the couple began writing new material, working out of their home studio in Jacksonville with a rotating cast of friends and musicians. Their first concert was on April 1, 2010 at the Savannah Music Festival, and although their touring schedule was limited in 2010, the group did perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, and several other festivals and venues.

The collaboration between Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi has also extended to other artists. Trucks and Tedeschi appeared together on Herbie Hancock's album, The Imagine Project, performing the track "Space Captain" with additional members of Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, including Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, and Mike Mattison. A music video was also released, documenting Herbie Hancock as he recorded the song at Trucks & Tedeschi's home studio.[3] Trucks and Tedeschi also appeared with Herbie Hancock to perform "Space Captain" at his 70th birthday concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.[1]

On March 7, 2011, the band announced that it was changing its name to the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The first Tedeschi Trucks Band CD, Revelator, was released on June 7, 2011. Rolling Stone gave the album four out of five stars, referring to it as a "masterpiece." [4] The album peaked at No. 92 on the Canadian Albums Chart,[5] and peaked at No. 164 in the UK Albums Chart.[6] The album won a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album at the 54th Grammy Awards.[7]

Their second album, Everybody's Talkin', was released on May 22, 2012. It was a live album consisting of performances of songs from Revelator as well as covers of rock, R&B and gospel classics.[8]

On October 5, 2012, bassist Oteil Burbridge posted a message on the band's website that he "will not be able to continue to tour with TTB" so he can focus on starting a family. Oteil and the band both hope to be able to work together again in the future. Ted Pecchio, Dave Monsey, and George Porter, Jr. were listed as fill-ins for the remaining 2012 tour dates.[9] On May 29, 2013, the band announced that Eric Krasno of Soulive and Lettuce would fill in as bassist for all 2013 summer tour dates through August 15 except for July 19–24 during which Tim Lefebvre would handle four-string bass duties.[10] Lefebvre was announced as the band's new permanent bassist on October 19, 2013.[11]

In 2013, they were nominated for Blues Music Awards in the 'Band' and 'Rock Blues Album' categories.[12]

On 15 May 2013, the band announced their second studio album to be titled Made Up Mind.[13] Released on August 20, 2013, the album garnered generally positive reviews, with Rolling Stone calling the album "equal parts Stax and Muscle Shoals without the dilution of either."[14]

On 26 January, 2015, the band announced that they would play Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and Doyle Bramhall II. A full summer tour of outdoor venues featuring this line up was announced on February 23, billed as the Wheels of Soul tour.

At the 2015 Lockn' Fesitval, the band honored the legacy of Joe Cocker and the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and album with a tribute/reunion concert that served as one of the festival's headlining acts.[15] Many alumni from the iconic 1970 Tour joined the band, including Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Chris Stainton, Pamela Polland and others including official photographer, Linda Wolf.[16]

While the band's first three releases were through a deal with Sony Masterworks, the band left the label after the release of Made Up Mind.[17] During breaks in touring in early 2015, the band used Trucks and Tedeschi's home studio in Jacksonville, FL to record a new album, Let Me Get By, announced on 18 November 2015.[18] Unlike their previous album, Made Up Mind (for which Sony had brought in hired songwriters[17]), Let Me Get By was written fully by the band, with help from friend and Wheels of Soul Tour participant Doyle Bramhall II. Trucks produced the album himself, after having co-produced the band's previous albums. Let Me Get By was released on January 29, 2016 by Fantasy Records and debuted at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Sales Chart.[19]

On January 11, 2016, the band announced a 2016 Wheels of Soul summer tour, featuring themselves along with Los Lobos and North Mississippi Allstars, to end with a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 5, 2016.[20] The announcement included a promise of "many more dates" to be announced in the near future.
