Wadi Feiran
Wadi Feiran (French: Ouadi Feîran), sometimes also known as the Wadi Paran,[1] is an 81-mile (130 km) wadi on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Its upper reaches, around the Jebel Musa, are known as the Wadi el-Sheikh (French: Ouadi Esh Sheikh).[2] It empties into the Red Sea's Gulf of Suez 18 miles (29 km) southeast of Abu Rodeis.[3]
It is associated with the Hebrew Scriptures' Rephidim.
The Feiran Oasis was formerly known as El Hesweh. It runs for about 3 miles (4.8 km) of the length of the wadi, 28 miles (45 km) above its mouth.[3] Its thousands of dates have drawn visitors for millennia and are currently inhabited by the Gabaly Bedouins.[3] A monk from St Catherine's also maintains a small church and farmstead.[3] Ptolemy identified the area as the site of Paran.[3] The nearby hill is the Tell Feiran.
