Tenby United Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the town of Tenby in West Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Llanelli Scarlets.[3] Tenby recently gained a double trophy haul gaining promotion to Division One West 2013-2014 and also winning the county cup. Making the local boys achievement even more remarkable given that the rest of the teams in the league are semi-professional.
Tenby RFC has one the county cup more than any other team.
Tenby RFC player Roy Osborn gained professional status with a number of Llanelli Scarlets caps off the back of the local sides success. Which he owes to his fellow back row warriors the break down specialist Luke Hansford and the complete player Patrick Roberts.
Early history
Rugby union was first played in Tenby around 1876 when several clubs were recorded as playing in the town. In 1898 one of these teams, the Tenby Swifts gained membership to the Welsh Football Union, which showed the commitment to the game in the area. In 1901 the Tenby Swifts formed with the Tenby Harlequins to create Tenby United RFC.
Modern game
Tenby United RFC now play in the structured WRU leagues with a second XV playing in the Worthington Leagues. Tenby United build their current squads through promoting local talent through their junior and youth teams.
