State Route 71 is a north–south state highway in Tennessee. For most of the length it is a "hidden" route, as it coincides with U.S. Route 441 in all but a short section in Knoxville. The road begins at the North Carolina state line in Sevier County within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Newfound Gap and ends at an intersection with U.S. Route 25W, Tennessee SR-116, and Tennessee SR-9 (hidden) in Rocky Top, Tennessee. Along the length SR-71 passes through Sevier County, a small portion of Blount County, Knox County, Anderson County, and in and out of Campbell County.
Within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park SR-71 is known as Newfound Gap Road, and follows along a valley carved by the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. Near the northern terminus SR-71 follows the Clinch River and passes over the top of Norris Dam.
At downtown Knoxville, SR-71 is signed a primary highway and this the only section where the SR-71 sign is posted. The sign is at the intersection of James White Parkway and Neyland Drive. Tennessee SR-158 follows James White Parkway from Interstate 40 and then splits off onto Neyland Drive leaving SR-71 continuing south as James White Parkway until it crosses the Tennessee River and is then known as South Knox Boulevard (though is still signed as James White Parkway). At this time, South Knox Blvd. ends at Sevierville Pike, although there are current plans to extend the road to meet U.S. Highway 441 (Chapman Highway) or Tennessee SR-168 (Governor John Sevier Highway).[2]
Concurrent routes
SR-71 overlaps the following routes:
- U.S. Route 441 (for most of the length SR-71 is a hidden route)
- U.S. Route 321 and Tennessee SR-73 (hidden) from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge
- U.S. Route 411 and Tennessee SR-35 (hidden) from Sevierville to near Seymour
- Tennessee SR-33 from Knoxville to Halls Crossroads
- Tennessee SR-170 in northern Knox County to southern Anderson County
- Tennessee SR-61 in Norris
